TEACHING TIPS

We will include some basic teaching tips here for teaching English in Taiwan. If you have been teaching ESL for some time these tips may seem very basic for you however we do feel that some of these tips can be very useful for someone just new to teaching English in Taiwan.

  • Speak slowly

I can't stress this enough, even some teachers that have been here for years still speak at a normal rate of speech, which is to fast for ESL learners.

  • Don't use a lot of slang or idioms

Except if you are teaching an advanced class or a special idiom class.

  • Make your class fun

Students not only come to learn English but they also go to English classes for entertainment. This of course is more true when teaching adults.

  • Use the whiteboard

Draw pictures or write new vocabulary on the board.

  • Stand up and walk around the classroom

By sitting down while teaching gives the students a feeling of boredom and

takes away from your energy level. Sitting down is fine if you are in a

discussion  type class around a board room table setting.

  • Always maintain eye contact with all your students

Sweeping your eyes back and forth about the room is a good way to

                             maintain eye contact.

  • Learn your students names

This makes it easier for you to call on people with questions

as well creates a more of a friendly atmosphere.

  • Prepare some kind of lesson plan

Helps the class run much more smoothly.

         More Teaching tips:(Disiplinary)

When teaching younger students you must learn some disciplinary  measures, I have a few that I usually use below:

  1. If you are right-handed, put the your most troublesome student in a seat closest to your right shoulder. This will make it more difficult for the student to get your attention he usually wants. Also putting your best female student next to your worst student could help.
  2. Get rid of empty chairs in a classroom, they can easily becomes a distraction, as your students will use them for tapping, kicking, putting their feet up, or shifting around.
  3. If two students are always talking simply separate  the students or isolate them. Students seating arrangements should also be changed on a regular basis.
  4. Do not let your students get out their books when you are presenting a new lesson. First use drawings or flash cards to present the lesson then allow them to use the book when they are practicing amongst themselves.
  5. Ask students who are talking a question.
  6. Sometimes when students misbehave is just a sign of boredom, so start a new activity  or lesson.
