Cities of Taiwan-coast to coast –living and travel in Taiwan

Taiwan
The main island of Taiwan, also known as Formosa, the name given from the Portuguese Ilha Formosa, meaning "beautiful island"), is located in East Asia off the coast of mainland China, south of mainland Japan but west of the end of Japan's Ryukyu Islands, and west-north-west of the Philippines. The scenery varies from sub-tropical vegetation to large mountain ranges The island is crossed by many waterways, and.  The climate is warm and the four seasons are much alike.

Taipei
Taipei City, the surrounding Taipei County, and the nearby Keelung City together form the taipei metropolitan area?but are administered under different local government bodies. Taipei City is a special municipality administered directly under the executive Yuan, while Taipei County and Keelung City are administered as part of taiwan Provence. Taipei commonly refers to the whole metropolitan area, while Taipei City refers to the city proper.
The major industries in the city include electrical and electronic manufacturing, textiles, metals, shipbuilding, and motorcycle manufacturing.
Taipei has a humid, subtropical climate and a distinct winter season, with average temperatures of 10° Celsius (50° Fahrenheit), which rise to 33° Celsius (90° Fahrenheit) in summer which is when the rainfall is highest. There is also a typhoon season between June and October.

Hualien
Hualien is located on the East coast of Taiwan .Whether people choose to  starting  a business, building a home, setting up a factory, tending to a farm, most everyone considers Hualien an ideal place.and is well known for the production of marble. In 2000, the quarrying operations around Taroko Gorge produced nearly nine million tons of the stone. This has led to Hualien being dubbed "City of Marble" by the local tourist authority, a name, which it lives up to by liberal use of the material. Marble features prominently in most of the large hotels and public buildings in the city, and even sections of sidewalk are paved with slabs of it. To show local gratitude for the naturally occurring abundance of the valuable stone, Hualien even has a temple built almost exclusively of marble: the opulent Temple of Eastern Purity.

Taiwan. Now, it is also the technological city. With the rich natural sights and the high tech industrial sector, young people find good job opportunities and immigrate into the city.
Hsinchu, located on West coast, is the oldest city in the northern Taiwan. It is a vital harbor city for both transportation and trading between northern Taiwan and Mainland China. Hsinchu locals have developed traditional industries (glass, noodles, etc.) and prosperous commercial activities.
Since 1980, the Science Park, known as the Taiwan's Silicon Valley, has attracted many technology companies who have set-up their factories there.
Hsinchu City was the "Trading Center" of the near area. It is the first developed city of the north

Kaohsiung

Located near the country’s Southern coast, is a city well-known for its scenic beauty, and a must-see for travelers. Try visiting the Longevity Hill Park, Zuoying Lotus Pond, Banping Mountain, Lovers' River and other such scenic spots as Seawater Outdoor Bathing in the Xizi Bay with snow-white fine sand beach and dark blue seawater. In the distance, palm trees stretch out their long branches, and the flamboyant trees with red blossom and evergreen foliage present a wonderful picture of a radiant and enchanting scene.

Keelung
a 40-minute drive northeast of Taipei, is one of Taiwan's international seaports and transportation hubs.
Keelung was a base for 16th century Japanese pirates and was later invaded by the Spanish, Dutch, French, and Japanese. A few traces of this turbulent past remain. Seagate Fortress, built between invasions during the 1840s, lies on a hill overlooking the harbor's eastern side. A hilltop on the western side offers fine views from the remnants of Dutch Fortress.
Keelung's most popular dining spot is Miaokou (Temple Mouth), a large section of food stalls selling fruit, seafood, chicken rolls, and other Taiwanese snacks and desserts. The temple is Shengwang Temple, which enshrines the Divine Ancestor of the people of Changchou in Fukien province's the area from which a major portion of Taiwan's early settlers came.

Kenting

At the Southern-most tip of the island, is known for its magnificent beaches, and the cozy, laid back atmosphere of the local population. 
Each year, Kenting's natural environment draws thousands of tourists from overseas to relax in these ideal weather conditions. The Taiwanese also flock to taste the freshest and finest seafood.
Water sports enthusiasts benefit from the large variety of activities, including scuba diving. The best place for scuba diving is the reef between South Bay and Maopitou. There you can find soft corals, and view the vibrant marine life.

Sun Moon Lake

 is situated to the north of Yu Shan (Jade Mountain) and to the south of Nenggao Mountain, Nantou County in Taiwan Province. It is the biggest natural lake in Taiwan and is formed by the accumulated water in the broken basin between Yu Mountain and Ali Mountain streams. The surface of the lake is 760 meters above sea level, its perimeter is 35 kilometers, the depth of the water is 30 meters on average and the lake area is over 90,000 square meters. To the north-east of the islet, the water is in a shape as round as the sun, so it is called Sun Lake while the water in the south-west looks like the moon, so it is called Moon Lake; hence, the combined name is Sun Moon Lake.

The beauty of Sun Moon Lake can be found relaxing on the mountains circling the lake. Peaks rise up, one after the other, carving out lush green hills. The broad, mirror-like water will most certainly have a calming effect on whoever visits. 
Taichung is a city located in central Taiwan (“Taichung” is actually “central Taiwan” in Chinese), and is the 3rd largest city on the island.
The terrain of Taichung City is high in the north and low in the south, the western side of which though facing sea, yet is blocked by mountains, thus scarcely being the victim of typhoon attack. Renowned as the cleanest city of Taiwan, the streets and roads of Taichung City are neat, quiet and tastefully laid out. There are tourist centers inside the city area, like Zhongshan Park, Baojue Temple, and Confucian Temple.  They represent the cultural center of Buddhism in Taiwan, and over years the Buddhist dharma gatherings are all held here. Cheap dining and great shopping are available in spots such as Tiger City or Electronics St.  Always being known as a city of culture, Taichung has many colleges and universities of higher education which are secondary only to Taipei.

Tainan

has, as a well-known historic and ancient city, preserved many important cultural relics and places of historic interest. There are 166 temples and monasteries and more than 40 Christian
and Catholic churches in the city. "There is a God every five steps and a temple at three", as the metaphor goes. Over 70 places are classified as first, second and third-grade places of historic interest, such as to the God of War, Chiqian Mansion, Anping Castle, Confucian Temple, Temple and Da Tian Hou Palace etc.
Taipei is both the largest city in Taiwan, and its nation’s capital.
Taipei City
The center of tourism in the northern part of Taiwan Province. Apart from the Yang Ming Mountain and Peitou Picturesque Scenic Spot, the Taipei Park is the biggest and the earliest-ever built with a Total area of 89 thousand square meters and the biggest wood-fenced zoo in scale in the province. There are many other places of interest for Taiwanese and foreigners alike;  appreciate the historic and scenic beauty of places such as the Taipei City Gate, Taipei 101 (Currently the tallest building in the world), the Long Shan Temple, Bao An Palace and Confucian Temple, just to name a few.
Taipei has many special local products and specialties, typical of its kind, ranging from Sheng Da Zhuang Chinese brush, Shilin pocket knives, molding picture, artistic pottery and porcelain down to stuffed dumplings made of glutinous rice flour served in soup, all of which attract the appreciation, buying and tasting of numerous visitors

 

Taitung
 Located in the South East part of the island, facing the Pacific ocean and is backed by the Central Mountain Range that runs over 3,500 square kilometers. It is the third largest county of Taiwan, in size. Green Island and Orchid Island are the two pearls of Taitung. Taitung has many features that attract hundreds of thousands of xpats and tourists each year that travel Taiwan. These features, proximity to the Pacific, and the two off-shore islands

Lanyu Green Island that include the beauty of the Pacific scenery, the cultures of six different aboriginal tribes, places of unusual historic or scenic interest, and the many subtropical plants and animals.

Taoyuan
A city located about an hour away from Taipei. It is famous for its international airport (formerly known as Chiang Kai-shek), and, as the gateway to Taiwan, the airport is like a small city offering a full range of local and foreign services.

Hsinhsu
This is one of the few theme parks on the island with up-to-date fun rides such as the Pirate Ship, Volcano Adventures, 360 degree Roller Coasters, , Jurassic Park, etc. Other than the magnificent and colorful structures, there are uniformed  servicemen, performance stages, food stalls, souvenir shops etc, providing the  exciting  fun and entertainment to the young and old alike. The park is divided into six main sections, each with its own theme. It is truly a fantastic play land and entertainment center.
The Little Ding Science Park Dong (Shiotintang)

 Located at Sanken Village, Hsinfung Town in Hsinchu County, near the Cypress Pine Mountain Scenic Area. Opened in 1979, the 30 hectare compound is divided into eight main sections, each with its own unique features and theme. There are more than 30 fun items, each is equipped with its own scientific peripherals such as laser beam displays, momentum test, solar power, wind power, sound wave, photocell, visual and audio aids etc. This is indeed a great place to learn about natural science while having lots of funs.
Kaohsiung,
 Located near the country’s Southern coast, is a city well-known for its scenic beauty, and a must-see for travelers. Travel and oudoors in Taiwan make many locations available.

Lovers Lake
 Located halfway up the scenic slope of the Tawulun Mountain. It is a natural highland lake where several mountain streams merge together and  surrounded by thick forest. It was originally named  Wu-yee Stone Tablet.
The gives the place the quietness and serenity it is famous for. Take a leisurely walk down the trails, you can totally emerge yourself in natures embrace.
Along the trails, there are three pavilions where you can enjoy splendid views of the lake from different angles. There are also BBQ pits and campsite facilities. North of the lake, there are hiking trails leading to the oceanfront of the mountain. Views along the trail will take you not only to the nearby fishing ports but also as far as Keelung Islet and Yehliu. East of the lake, the Tawulun Mountain is not only famous for being the highest peak in the area, but also for its historical remains.

Peak of the mountain, you can find a huge abandoned fortress built in the early Ching dynasty where many of the ancient buildings still remain. Here, you can enjoy splendid panoramic views over Taiwan’s north-east Coast.
Located north of Keelung, this 80-meter deep cave is the largest in the region. It was said that
fairies once worshiped in this cave before they rose to heaven. The cave is therefore named Fairy Cave (Shian Tong).
The cave has three chambers. The serenity and winding passages inside the caves add an air of mystery to the place. A huge statue of Buddha guards the entrance. In the main chamber, there are wall carvings of Buddha and other historical art work. A statue of Buddha stands at the end of the chamber for the worshippers.
The right chamber is smaller and barely accessible. Worshippers nevertheless perform their virtue right outside. The left chamber is fully shrouded in darkness. Visitors have to rely on torchlight and bend down to get pass as some parts are very low lying.
A straight walk from the side of the cave towards the ocean barrier wall, you can find on the left hillside an abandoned fortress named City of Holland. The view from here is enchanting indeed.
Peace Island, originally named She-liau Island, is 4Km from Keelung city center. It spreads over 66 hectares of natural rock face coast. Due to its unique natural features, the area is now designated a national park. There are three main unique features.
Rock terrain
the rock terrain is formed by ages of ocean current erosion. A far view of the terrain resembles a spectacular rice field terrace.

Caves
Near the rock terrain, lies a 20-meter deep cave. History has it that during the war with Holland led by our Koxinga; this was the Dutch’s last retreat. Their writing carved on the wall is now one of the major historical remains in Keelung.

Fossils
On the north coast of the park lays numerous fossils of varying shapes. As some of the surrounding rocks are shaped like human heads, this site is therefore named Crowd of a Thousand Heads.

Ta-an Beach Theme Park
Located at Ta-an Village in Taichung County, was originally named Ta-an Beach Lido. After its expansion and revamp, the area now houses , sculpture park, 500 parking spaces, a swimming pool, play area, resort  At times, it also provides water sports activities :cottages, camp grounds and BBQ areas. Multi-purpose recreational and relaxation areas.

Originally named “Salamon”, Li Shan (1,945 meters) becomes popular after the opening of the Central Cross-island Highway as increasingly more people move up this mountain. To improve the living and education standard of the locals, the military defense logistic as well as to expand the tourism business here, the county government set up a regulatory committee here on Li Shan in July 1, 1967. On March 1, 1980, after several changes in the bureaucratic set up, Li Shan came formally under the Provincial Governments Transport Office, Tourism Administration Section. The areas of jurisdiction include the surrounding scenic areas such as Hoping Village area and Shanchoon areas.

 Located at the middle of East-west Cross-island Road. In the east is the Taroko National Park, the North is Ilan, west is Taichung City and passing Hohuan Shan (Mt Hohuan) in a southward direction is Mushih. FromTaichung County eastward going along Tachia River and East Lake (Tungfu), there is a natural gorge where the majestic mountains and steep walls are a truly magnificent sight. Li Shan scenic area is located at the middle of East-west Cross-island Road. In the east is the Taroko National Park, the North is Ilan, west is Taichung City and passing Hohuan Shan (Mt Hohuan) in southward direction is Mushih. From Taichung County eastward going along Tachia River and East Lake (Tungfu), there is a natural gorge where the majestic mountains and steep walls are a truly magnificent sight.

Rising at a height of about 2,000 meters, the summer temperature at Li Shan is around 24 degree C. Winter temperature around Sher Shan and Hohuan Shan areas are around -4 degree C. As such, these mountain resorts are popular either for escaping the heat in summer or simply for appreciating the snow in winter.
Li Shan is on a mountain range; its scenic beauty is one of the best known.

 Its peaceful and natural beauty offers a perfect escape from the hectic city life. As Li Shan is centrally located on the Central Cross-island Highway; it is not only a popular tourist area but also an essential resting place. Here, you can find bus stops, post office, Telephone Company, banks, gas station and business hotels etc in modern designs. It is truly an attractive highland town in the wilderness. No matter whether its dawn or at dusk, the air is breezy and refreshing. There are a couple dozen  private and government owned hotels providing food and lodging for the visitors.
In spring, seas of flowers dot the landscape.
 In summer, trees are ridden by fruits and
in fall, red maple leaves light up the entire landscape before the mountains are
 Winter blanketed in snow in winter.

These changes are captivating and the refreshing mountain air is heavenly. One km after the Shoushan entrance, there is where photos were displayed depicting the construction process of the central cross road, development of Li Shan and its ecological make-up, the aborigine Tayal tribes cultural items, opening of the forest and marble sculpturing. Visitors will sure gain a greater insight into the difficult task of the road construction and get to know Li Shan better. a look behind the memorial hall for an exhibition hall, dedicated to the memory of the engineers , workers and who perished during the construction of the highway.
Fushou means “happiness and longevity”. This mountain farm is located 6 km above the southern slope of Li Shan (Pear Mountain). It’s primary production is  alpine vegetables and temperate fruits. Driving along the farm roads, you can see plaques with descriptions hanging on many fruit trees for visitors’ knowledge. Coupled with the placid alpine landscape and the lush vegetation, this farm area is truly a pleasurable place to visit.
